CBO Issues Cautionary Notice Against Double Swiping of Bank Cards1/5/2019 8:00:00 PMCBO Issues Cautionary Notice Against Double Swiping of Bank CardsCentral Bank of Oman has issued a cautionary notice against double swiping of bank cards by some of the merchants in the country.
Central Bank of Oman has issued a cautionary notice against double swiping of bank cards by some of the merchants in the country.

In the notice, CBO pointed out that although the Banks have acted on CBO's directive and have informed their customers about the implications of the double swiping, it said, some of the merchants were yet to comply with the directives.

CBO had issued directives to banks engaged in merchants acquiring business, to ensure that double swiping practice is stopped. However, some of the merchants and public service providers were noticed to be still carrying out this practice of "Double Swiping", which prompted CBO to issue a reminder in the form of a general public notice.

CBO notice explained that 'Double Swiping' is swiping of a card for the second time by the merchants at their terminals or cash registers, immediately after swiping or inserting the card for payment on the Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal belonging to the Bank. The second swiping is apparently being done by the merchants, to facilitate their accounting processes, and sometimes to carry out their marketing initiatives.

"In this process, the merchants collect the customers' data, which is widely considered as unsecure and hence discouraged worldwide as it gives access to personal and sensitive information of the cardholders," the notice said.

CBO further said that this practice is also against customer confidentiality and data privacy requirements of the Sultanate.

Accordingly, CBO has called upon all citizens and residents holding Bank Card (debit, credit, and prepaid) to take necessary precautions in this regard, and not to allow swiping of their cards more than once for each payment made by them.

It also advised people not to share PIN number of their Bankcards, and requested them to report incidents of "double swiping" to their respective banks immediately.

CBO also called upon everyone to assist and cooperate in promoting and maintaining a safe payment environment in the country.

Cautionary notice against double swiping of bank cards

0x010100C568DB52D9D0A14D9B2FDCC96666E9F2007948130EC3DB064584E219954237AF3900075E4FF44B3F64489802BE694C5C6FB70300A9BCF8A0432A87429120A5B0A0EDBFF9
